What Happens When A Narcissist Gets Caught Lying? 7 Reactions They May Have

One of the most confusing experiences in a difficult relationship is discovering that the person you trusted may not be telling the truth, and then watching their reaction when they are confronted.

Many people expect that when someone is presented with evidence, they will simply admit what happened, apologise and take responsibility.

But sometimes, the opposite happens.

Instead of accountability, the conversation can become about defending themselves, attacking the person who raised the concern or creating a completely different version of events.

This can leave you feeling frustrated and confused.

You may think:

“Why won’t they just admit what happened?”

“Why are they making me the problem?”

“Why do I feel like I’m defending myself when I’m the one who was hurt?”

When someone displays strong narcissistic traits, protecting their self-image can sometimes become more important than acknowledging uncomfortable truths.

The Things Narcissists Teach Us About Ourselves: Finding Self-Worth, Healthy Boundaries, Healing & Freedom After Narcissistic Abuse Transform your pain into growth by rebuilding self-worth, strengthening boundaries, healing emotional wounds, and creating a life beyond narcissistic abuse.

Here are seven reactions narcissistic people may display when their lies stop working.

1. They Change Their Story

One of the most noticeable signs that something is wrong is when the explanation keeps changing.

At first, there is one version of events.

Then new details appear.

Certain parts disappear.

The meaning of conversations changes.

Suddenly, what happened is not what you remember.

You may hear:

“That’s not what I meant.”

“You misunderstood me.”

“That’s not how it happened.”

Changing the story can make it difficult to know what is actually being discussed because the original issue keeps moving.

Instead of addressing the contradiction, the focus becomes explaining the new version.

This can leave you spending hours trying to prove what happened, while the other person avoids addressing the original behaviour.

If you’re ready to stop overthinking, calm your nervous system, and finally break the trauma bond, my structured CBT-based recovery programme gives you the practical tools to rebuild confidence and regain control. 👉 Click here to start your healing journey:

2. They Create More Explanations To Support The Lie

When one explanation no longer makes sense, another may appear.

A person may add more details, bring in unrelated information or create a new reason for why something happened.

The goal becomes protecting the original story rather than examining whether it was true.

This can create a confusing cycle:

You ask a simple question.

You receive a complicated explanation.

You raise another concern.

Another explanation appears.

Eventually, you may feel exhausted because you are trying to follow a conversation that constantly changes direction.

The more you try to understand, the more complicated it becomes.

3. They Attack Your Character

When someone cannot defend their actions, they may focus on attacking the person questioning them.

Instead of answering:

“Did you do this?”

The conversation becomes:

“Why are you asking?”

“You’re just jealous.”

“You’re obsessed.”

“You’re too sensitive.”

“You always cause problems.”

This shifts attention away from their behaviour and onto your personality.

Suddenly, you are defending yourself instead of discussing what happened.

This tactic can be particularly damaging because it can make you start questioning your own reactions.

You may wonder:

“Am I being unreasonable?”

“Am I making too much of this?”

“Should I just let it go?”

But someone attacking your character does not automatically mean their version is correct.

If you’re ready to calm the constant alertness, regulate your triggers, and help your body move beyond survival mode, my step-by-step nervous system recovery programme gives you practical tools to feel calmer, safer and more in control after narcissistic abuse. 👉 Click here to start healing your nervous system:

4. They Become The Victim

Another common response can be turning the situation around so they appear to be the person who has been harmed.

The conversation changes from:

“Why did you lie?”

to:

“How could you accuse me?”

They may focus on feeling attacked, criticised or betrayed.

Suddenly, you are comforting them.

You are explaining yourself.

You are apologising for upsetting them.

The original issue disappears.

This can be incredibly confusing because you entered the conversation seeking honesty or accountability, but somehow you leave feeling responsible for their emotions.

5. They Create A Distraction

Sometimes when a difficult truth is being discussed, the conversation suddenly moves somewhere else.

They may:

  • Start a different argument
  • Bring up something you did months ago
  • Accuse you of something unrelated
  • Create drama around another issue

The attention moves away from the original question.

Instead of:

“Why did this happen?”

You are now discussing:

“Why are you bringing this up?”

or

“What about the time you did this?”

This can keep you trapped in endless explanations and arguments where the original concern never gets resolved.

6. They Recruit Other People

When someone feels their version of events is being challenged, they may seek support from others.

They may tell friends, family members or colleagues their side of the story before you have a chance to explain yours.

They may leave out important details, present themselves as the victim or describe you in a negative way.

This can be incredibly painful because you may feel like you are not only dealing with the original situation, but also trying to correct a version of events that has already spread.

The important thing to remember is that hearing one person’s perspective does not necessarily mean hearing the full story.

7. They Rewrite The Past

Perhaps one of the most unsettling experiences is when someone denies things you clearly remember.

They may say:

“That never happened.”

“You’re remembering it wrong.”

“You’re exaggerating.”

Over time, repeated denial can make you question your own memory and judgment.

This is why it is important to stay connected to your own experiences.

You do not need someone else to agree with what happened for your feelings to be valid.

Your experience matters.

Why Do These Reactions Feel So Confusing?

The reason these situations can feel so difficult is because you are often approaching the conversation with the expectation of fairness.

You believe:

“If I explain clearly enough, they will understand.”

“If I show the evidence, they will acknowledge it.”

“If they care about me, they will want to fix it.”

But if someone is focused on protecting their image rather than resolving the issue, more explanations may not create the outcome you hope for.

You can provide facts.

You can explain your feelings.

You can show evidence.

But you cannot force someone to accept something they are determined to reject.

Stop Trying To Prove Your Reality

One of the biggest emotional drains after experiencing manipulation or dishonesty is constantly trying to convince someone else of what you know happened.

You replay conversations.

You collect evidence.

You prepare explanations.

You search for the perfect words that will finally make them understand.

But healing often begins when you stop making your peace dependent on someone else admitting the truth.

Their denial does not erase your experience.

Their confidence does not make their version accurate.

Their refusal to take responsibility does not mean you are wrong.

Rebuilding Trust In Yourself

When you have repeatedly been made to question your perception, rebuilding confidence in yourself becomes an important part of healing.

This means learning to trust your observations again.

Recognising patterns.

Strengthening boundaries.

Understanding why certain situations trigger such strong emotional responses.

The goal is not to win every argument.

The goal is to stop being pulled into cycles that leave you feeling confused, exhausted and disconnected from yourself.

Because sometimes the biggest sign that something is wrong is not the original lie.

It is what happens when the truth is finally brought into the room.

When someone cannot control the story anymore, their reaction can reveal more than their words ever did.
