Unmasking Covert Narcissism: Recognizing the Subtle Signs and Behaviors of Toxic Individuals

In the world of psychology, narcissism is a term that often brings to mind images of loud, brash individuals who constantly seek attention and validation from those around them. However, there is another side to narcissism that is much more subtle and insidious – covert narcissism.

Covert narcissism can be difficult to spot at first because the behaviours are not as overt as those of their more overt counterparts. These individuals may not be as obviously self-centred or grandiose, but they still exhibit a number of toxic traits that can have a profound impact on those around them. In this article, we will explore some of the key behaviours that can help identify covert narcissism, including playing the victim, secretive behaviour, projection, triangulation, passive aggression, gaslighting, smear campaigns, and sensitivity to criticism.

Behind The Mask: The Rise Of A Narcissist

One of the hallmark behaviours of covert narcissism is playing the victim. These individuals often paint themselves as the helpless, innocent party in situations where they are actually the ones causing harm. They use their status as a victim to manipulate others into feeling sorry for them or to deflect blame away from themselves. They may constantly seek sympathy and attention from those around them, using their perceived victimhood as a way to control others and maintain their perceived moral high ground.

Another key behaviour of covert narcissism is secretive behaviour. These individuals often withhold information that others deserve to know, either to maintain a sense of power or control over the situation or to keep others in the dark about their true motives. They may lie or manipulate to keep secrets hidden, even when those secrets could have a significant impact on those around them. This secretive behaviour can make it difficult for others to trust or fully understand the covert narcissist, leading to feelings of confusion or unease.

Projection is another common behaviour exhibited by covert narcissists. Instead of taking responsibility for their own actions or faults, they will often project their negative qualities onto others. They may accuse others of being selfish, manipulative, or dishonest, when in reality, these are traits that they themselves possess. By projecting their insecurities onto others, covert narcissists can deflect attention away from their own flaws and maintain a sense of superiority or righteousness.

Triangulation is yet another behaviour often seen in covert narcissists. This tactic involves pitting people against each other in order to maintain control or create chaos. Covert narcissists may gossip or spread rumours about others, play one person against another, or use manipulation to turn friends or family members against each other. By creating conflict and discord between those around them, they can maintain a sense of power and control over the situation while also keeping others off balance and unsure of who to trust.

Passive aggression is a common tactic used by covert narcissists to manipulate others and get what they want without having to take responsibility for their actions. Instead of being openly confrontational or aggressive, they will often use subtle, underhanded tactics to assert their dominance or get their way. They may make snide remarks, give backhanded compliments, or use sarcasm to belittle or undermine those around them. This passive-aggressive behaviour can be difficult to spot at first, but over time, it can have a significant impact on those who are on the receiving end.

Gaslighting is another insidious tactic often used by covert narcissists to manipulate those around them. Gaslighting involves making someone doubt their own perceptions or reality, often by denying or twisting the truth or by making them feel like they are going crazy. Covert narcissists may use gaslighting to maintain control over their victims, to invalidate their feelings or experiences, or to make them question their own sanity. This behaviour can be incredibly damaging to those who are on the receiving end, leading to feelings of confusion, self-doubt, and isolation.

Smear campaigns are another tactic often used by covert narcissists to maintain control and power over those around them. When they feel threatened or exposed, they may launch a campaign of rumours, lies, or character assassinations against their perceived enemies. They may spread false information, manipulate others into turning against the target, or use any means necessary to destroy their reputation. By engaging in smear campaigns, covert narcissists can effectively silence dissent or criticism while also maintaining their own sense of superiority or righteousness.

Finally, covert narcissists are often extremely sensitive to criticism. While they may appear confident or self-assured on the outside, any perceived slight or criticism can send them into a tailspin of defensiveness or anger. They may react with extreme hostility, denial, or blame-shifting, refusing to accept any responsibility for their actions or faults. This sensitivity to criticism can make it difficult to have a healthy, constructive relationship with a covert narcissist, as any attempts to provide feedback or address issues may be met with resistance or deflection.

Overall, identifying covert narcissism can be a challenging and complex process, as the behaviours are often subtle and insidious. By being aware of some of the key behaviours associated with covert narcissism, such as playing the victim, secretive behaviour, projection, triangulation, passive aggression, gaslighting, smear campaigns, and sensitivity to criticism, individuals can better protect themselves from the toxic effects of these individuals. By recognising the warning signs and setting boundaries, it is possible to navigate relationships with covert narcissists in a healthier and more empowered way.
