The Somatic Narcissist

What is a Somatic Narcissist?

When we think of narcissists, we often picture someone who is grandiose, arrogant, and self-absorbed. While these traits are certainly common among narcissists, there is another type of narcissist that often goes unnoticed – the somatic narcissist. Somatic narcissists are individuals who derive their narcissistic supply from their physical appearance, sexual prowess, and overall physical attractiveness.

Unlike other types of narcissists who may rely on their achievements or intelligence to boost their ego, somatic narcissists place a heavy emphasis on their external appearance. They are obsessed with their bodies, often spending hours in the gym, getting plastic surgery, or engaging in other cosmetic procedures to maintain their physical attractiveness.

Behaviours that Identify a Somatic Narcissist

There are several key behaviours that can help identify a somatic narcissist. These behaviours are often driven by their need for constant validation and admiration from others.

  1. Obsession with Physical Appearance: Somatic narcissists are obsessed with their physical appearance and will go to great lengths to maintain it. They may spend hours at the gym, undergo cosmetic procedures, or obsessively monitor their diet to ensure they look their best at all times.
  2. Sexual Promiscuity: Somatic narcissists often use their sexuality as a way to boost their ego and gain validation from others. They may engage in numerous sexual relationships or flings, often using sex as a tool to manipulate and control others.
  3. Materialistic and Status-Oriented: Somatic narcissists place a high value on material possessions and status symbols. They may flaunt their wealth and possessions as a way to gain admiration and envy from others.
  4. Lack of Empathy: Like other types of narcissists, somatic narcissists lack empathy for others. They are primarily focused on themselves and their own needs, often disregarding the feelings and emotions of those around them.
  5. Manipulative Behaviours: Somatic narcissists are skilled manipulators who will use charm, charisma, and seduction to get what they want. They may use their physical appearance or sexuality to manipulate others into doing their bidding.

Impact on Those Around Them

The behaviours and traits of somatic narcissists can have a profound impact on those around them. Their constant need for validation and admiration can be exhausting for friends, family members, and romantic partners.

  1. Emotional Manipulation: Somatic narcissists are skilled at manipulating others to get what they want. They may use their physical appearance or sexuality to seduce and control others, leading to toxic and unhealthy relationships.
  2. Lack of Emotional Support: Somatic narcissists are often unable to provide emotional support or empathy to those around them. They are primarily focused on themselves and their own needs, leaving little room for the emotional needs of others.
  3. Energy Draining: Dealing with a somatic narcissist can be emotionally draining and exhausting. Their constant need for attention and validation can leave those around them feeling emotionally depleted and unfulfilled.
  4. Fear of Abandonment: Somatic narcissists may have a fear of abandonment that drives their manipulative and controlling behaviours. They may go to great lengths to keep others under their control, using their physical appearance and sexuality as tools of manipulation.
  5. Codependency: Those in relationships with somatic narcissists may find themselves in codependent dynamics, where they rely on the narcissist for validation and self-worth. This can lead to toxic and dysfunctional relationships that are difficult to break free from.

In conclusion, somatic narcissists are a unique subtype of narcissistic personality disorder that derives their narcissistic supply from their physical appearance and sexuality. Their behaviours and traits can have a profound impact on those around them, leading to toxic and unhealthy relationships. It is important to recognise the signs of somatic narcissism and take steps to protect yourself from their manipulative and controlling behaviours.
