Narcissism is a personality trait that is known for its self-centeredness, lack of empathy, and manipulative behaviour. One of the more subtle ways that narcissists manipulate those around them is through implied deception. This tactic involves leading others to believe something without explicitly stating it and then failing to correct any false assumptions or conclusions that they draw. This form of manipulation is often difficult to detect, as it can be so subtle and indirect. In this article, we will explore the concept of implied deception, how it differs from other forms of manipulation, such as lying and gaslighting, and examples of how narcissists use this tactic to their advantage.
Behind The Mask: The Rise Of A Narcissist
Lying, lying through omission, gaslighting, and implied deception are all forms of manipulation, but they differ in their approach and intent. Lying is the most straightforward of the four, involving an intentional falsehood in order to deceive someone. Lying through omission, on the other hand, involves leaving out important information in order to manipulate a situation without technically telling a lie. Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which a person seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual, making them question their own memory, perception, or sanity.
Implied deception, however, is a more covert form of manipulation. It involves the narcissist leading someone to draw a conclusion that works in their favour without explicitly stating it and then failing to correct the false assumption or conclusion. This allows the narcissist to manipulate the situation without technically lying or providing false information. It is a very powerful tool for a narcissist’s manipulation, as it will enable them to maintain a sense of plausible deniability while still achieving their desired outcome.
One of the most common ways that narcissists use implied deception is by leading others to believe something and then failing to correct the false assumption. For example, a narcissist may make a vague statement about their plans for the weekend, leading someone to believe that they will be spending time with them. However, when the weekend arrives, the narcissist is nowhere to be found, leaving the other person feeling confused and hurt. When confronted about the situation, the narcissist may claim that they never explicitly said they would spend time together, therefore avoiding taking responsibility for leading the other person to believe something that was not true.
Another example of implied deception is when a narcissist leads someone to draw a conclusion that works in their favour and then fails to correct it. For instance, a narcissist may make a comment at work that hints at their involvement in a project, leading others to believe that they played a significant role. However, when it comes time for recognition, the narcissist is quick to downplay their involvement, all while hoping others just believe the narcissist is being humble and praising them, not realising the narcissist actually had nothing to do with the project. In this way, the narcissist manipulates the situation to benefit themselves without technically lying or providing false information.
Spotting implied deception can be challenging, as narcissists are often skilled at maintaining a facade of innocence and authenticity. One clue to look for is their smugness as they fail to confirm or deny a false assumption. Narcissists often take pleasure in manipulating others and may display subtle signs of satisfaction when they successfully lead someone to believe something without explicitly stating it. They may also exhibit a lack of concern or empathy for the confusion and hurt that their implied deception causes, further revealing their true intentions.
When you do discover the truth and confront the narcissist about their implied deception, they often respond with defensiveness and denial. They may claim that they never said or did anything wrong and try to shift the blame onto the other person for misunderstanding them. This is a classic tactic of narcissists, as they are unwilling to take responsibility for their actions and will do whatever it takes to maintain their sense of superiority and control.
In conclusion, implied deception is a powerful and insidious form of manipulation that narcissists use to control and manipulate those around them. By leading others to draw false conclusions and failing to correct them, narcissists are able to maintain a sense of plausible deniability and avoid taking responsibility for their actions. It is important to be aware of this tactic and to be vigilant in recognising when it is being used against you. By understanding the concept of implied deception and knowing how to spot it, you can protect yourself from falling victim to a narcissist’s manipulative behavior.
