Beneath the dazzling exterior lies a pattern of behaviours that reveal the true nature of a narcissist.

1. Grandiosity

The stories they tell are mesmerising. Tales of unmatched achievements, unique talents, and extraordinary experiences are shared with a sense of pride. At first, these claims are impressive, leaving others in awe. But over time, inconsistencies begin to emerge. The achievements don’t quite add up, and the grand accomplishments seem more like exaggerations than reality.

This inflated sense of self-importance is central to narcissism. It creates an illusion of greatness that demands admiration, even when the truth falls short.


2. Preoccupation with Fantasies

Conversations often drift into a world of imagined grandeur. There are vivid descriptions of future wealth, power, or an idealised version of life that seems just out of reach. They talk about building empires or achieving extraordinary success, but their actions rarely align with these visions.

These fantasies serve as an escape from reality, where they can feel superior and invincible. However, the disconnect between dreams and actions often leaves those around them feeling confused or disappointed.


3. Belief in Uniqueness

They insist on being different, claiming that only a select few can truly understand them. This belief in their own uniqueness creates an air of exclusivity. Being part of their world feels special at first, but over time, it becomes clear that this is a tactic to elevate themselves above others.

This sense of being “one of a kind” isolates them, as they see most people as unworthy of their attention or understanding.


4. Need for Excessive Admiration

The need for praise is constant. Compliments and validation are never enough; they always want more. If the admiration stops, their mood shifts dramatically. They may accuse others of being ungrateful or unsupportive, creating an atmosphere where those around them feel pressured to provide endless reassurance.

This insatiable hunger for admiration stems from a fragile sense of self-worth. It’s a never-ending cycle that leaves others feeling drained.


5. Sense of Entitlement

Rules and norms don’t seem to apply. Whether it’s expecting to skip queues, demanding special treatment, or insisting on getting their way, there’s an underlying belief that they deserve more than others. If their expectations aren’t met, frustration or anger often follows.

This sense of entitlement can create tension in relationships, as it becomes clear that their needs always come first, regardless of how it affects others.


6. Exploitation of Others

Over time, patterns of manipulation and exploitation become apparent. They may take credit for others’ work, borrow without returning, or lean on others’ generosity without giving back. Relationships feel transactional, as they seem to view people as tools to achieve their goals.

This behaviour leaves those around them feeling used and undervalued, questioning their own worth and boundaries.


7. Lack of Empathy

When others share struggles or emotions, the response is often indifferent or dismissive. Conversations are quickly redirected back to their own experiences, leaving others feeling unseen or unheard.

This inability to connect with others’ emotions creates a significant barrier in relationships. Over time, the lack of empathy becomes exhausting, as emotional support is rarely, if ever, reciprocated.


8. Envy

There’s a tendency to downplay others’ successes, often accompanied by subtle criticism or gossip. At the same time, they accuse others of being jealous of them, reinforcing their narrative of superiority.

This dynamic creates a cycle of comparison and resentment, where envy fuels their need to diminish others while elevating themselves.


9. Arrogance

Perhaps the most exhausting trait is the constant display of arrogance. They belittle others, dismiss differing opinions, and act as though their perspective is the only one that matters. Over time, this behaviour alienates those around them, as the condescension becomes unbearable.

Arrogance serves as a shield for their fragile ego, allowing them to maintain a sense of superiority while masking deep-seated insecurities.


The Narcissistic Cycle

The cycle of interacting with a narcissist is dizzying. One moment, they’re charming and captivating, drawing people in with their charisma. The next, they’re draining, leaving others questioning their worth. Every behaviour is carefully designed to maintain control and protect their fragile sense of self.

Recognising these traits is the first step in breaking free from their grip. Behind the grandiosity and arrogance lies a deep insecurity—a fear of being exposed, rejected, or seen as ordinary.
